Proposition 2 Campaign ~ Words From A Female Sow ~ Poem Prompt!

Words From A Female Sow

Seweeeee I was born a female sow,
a lifetime spanning merely 3-4 years.
My factory farm life conditions now,
could bring many a human to tears.

Living in miniscule gestation crates,
with no area to turn around or lay.
Standing room only is my fate,
until I’m slain on slaughter day.

I can deliver you up to eight litters,
quickly growing wide as my enclosure.
Still considered one of God’s creatures,
my plight finally gaining public exposure.

Find pity in a hog’s short life measured,
as you eat my meat from your dinner plate.
My brief swine existence truly treasured,
with passage of Proposition 2, 2008!

A poem for Jo's Word Catalyst Prompt. My poem was also featured on BloggingPoet.com November 13, 2008.
Did any of you catch Oprah's show on animal factory farms? I can surely empathize with both sides. But as an animal lover, I agree with Wayne Pacelli president of The Humane Society of The United States, on ethical treatment for all animals including the ones we eat! Makes me sad to see how tightly cramped in these cages the poor animals live! As seen on the show, there are farmers who do use space to animals advantage. Proposition 2 can make a difference in the short lives of all factory farm animals. Below is a video I found on Proposition 2, loved it! Please Vote yes on Proposition 2!

Nifty video. I can't stop tapping my foot. The one point that hits home with me is that it helps family farmers, not to mention the fact it is wrong to treat living creatures like lifeless commodities. How in the heck can you justify it except for $$$$. Does morality mean nothing in pursuing a buck? I'm not in PETA or anything, but this so obvious.

P.S. Good to see you doing prompts.

Hey Jo,

I really like the video too. A good old song! Your prompt made me think of all this, Thanks! :)

Due to my sorry dial-up connection I couldn't watch the video. While I do enjoy my meat there are certainly acceptable and humane ways of attaining it. As Jo J states, the love of the almighty dollar seems to trump morality these days! Jo, I appreciate your involvement on behalf of all creatures!

Florida passed a similar law four years ago

All that will happen is the Humane group will pick up the animals when the farmers cant pay for the changes. The Humane group will kill them with there poison then dump millions of animals into the land fill. There is e-coli outbreak showing up in city water in a number of States. The dead animals bacteria is getting into both the groundwater and the runoff from the landfill. The kill drug doesn't break down and it's a matter of time before the drug shows up in YOUR drinking water. You are signing the populations death warrant. No compassion for the group YOU WERE BORN INTO. KILLERS

Hi Dan,

Thanks, glad you are one who agrees with humane treatment. Hope your connection comes up, I know dial-up can be a pain.

I just changed to DSL almost 2 years ago, and I love it. Everyone was mad cause I tied up the phoneline! Plus my computer was so out of date!

Animals are my passion, I hate the fact they die for us. But we must survive somehow!

Hey D.B.

How do you think the law is working there? Just wondering how it went over, if the effects are showing up!

Hello A,

I know there's a lot of opposition against Prop 2, and some valid points you brought to light. The farmers will be compensated for the changes.

Can you honestly look at these caged animals and not feel some pity for them? I cannot!

I believe farmers are the best folk around, no one works harder or a longer day than a farmer. I'm surrounded by cow pastures where the cows run freely, I can look out there and say they have some life. Farmlands are all around me, and I believe with all the land that farmers have Prop 2 is a feasible plan!

I've not seen much for effect myself but this isn't an area with much for hog farms.
How did prop#2 do?

I was little late to see this movie. You found humorous one!!! I know that the issue is (was?) serious, but in this way many people can pay attention! Thanks for the post ;)

Hi Ochi,

Yes it's important to bring attention to things in which you have a passion about. In this way, we can make a change if we all stand together.
